In our experience this can only be done effectively where an organisation has developed its own internally agreed roadmap which fuses the key elements of people, technology, data and culture, and has clearly enunciated the desired outcome.
From this point it is essential to accurately match the tools, systems and capabilities required to provide the capability uplift to make that outcome a reality. From our own experiences we are aware of some of the pitfalls of buying capability, which include but are not limited to:
impressive but has expensive functionality that is not required, thereby not providing value for money and cementing in the risk of over-servicing or future failure; or
functionality that was developed to in fact achieve a different outcome but, with adjustments, is being sold as an appropriate solution, thereby making sub-optimal performance and possible downstream costs highly likely; or
purchasing capability that has built-in servicing costs that entail continued spending into future financial years.
